Paul McCartney: No sign of divorce deal
There was no sign of a settlement of the Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills divorce court battle. The divorce hearing looks set to stretch into a second week, after a judge allotted extra time for the couple's court case. The hearing was scheduled on end Friday, but officials at London's Royal Courts of Justice said the case before Justice Hugh Bennett would continue Monday.
It could have been the greatest divorce court drama in British legal history.
Sir Paul McCartney and Mills has been separated in 2006 after four years of marriage and have since traded blows in the media while trying, and failing, to agree on divorce terms.
The hearing was called to decide on Mills' share of the former Beatle's fortune, estimated at as much as $1.6 billion. According to media, Paul McCartney has offered his wife about $50 million and that she is seeking at least double that amount.
Former Beatles Paul McCartney left the building with his barrister Nicholas Mostyn QC and the rest of his legal team.
Paul McCartney, 65 and Heather Mills, 40, has made no comment to the reporters and photographers who have gathered outside court each day.
Sir Paul was accompanied by his heavyweight legal team led by Fiona Shackleton, a divorce lawyer who also acted for the Prince of Wales in his divorce from Diana, Princess of Wales.
The cost of future security is thought to be a key issue, with the former model pressing for a deal that includes what she says is needed for her protection and that of the couple’s three-year-old daughter, Beatrice.
The highest divorce payout awarded by a British court was the £48 million made to Beverley Charman after her 28-year marriage to insurance magnate John Charman ended. That sum came from the couple's total assets of £131 million. But lawyers specializing in big-money payouts say agreements as high as £100 million have been reached privately.
The couple married in June 2002 — four years after the death of Paul McCartney's first wife, Linda — and their daughter Beatrice was born in October the following year. They announced their separation in 2006, and McCartney filed for divorce alleging "unreasonable behavior" by his wife.
