Heath Ledger: Friends and family bid farewell in home town
Hollywood celebrities and hundreds of other mourners gathered on Saturday to bid farewell to Hollywood star Heath Ledger at a ceremony in Perth in western Australia.
Heath Ledger, 28, well known for his role as a conflicted gay cowboy in the movie "Brokeback Mountain," died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs in his New York apartment on 22nd January, 2008.
Michelle Williams, actress and Ledger's former fiancee and Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett had gathered with other mourners to honor the late actor.
His death shocked film fans and actors around the world.
Heath Ledger's father Kim Ledger said on Saturday morning, "It's a pretty sad time. We're finding it difficult to cope."
Mr. Kim said, "The funeral will be very, very private, There will only be 10 people, which is my immediate family and nobody else."
Michelle Williams arrived there wearing dark glasses and a white dress with black trim, was not accompanied by Matilda, her 2-year-old daughter with Ledger.
Barbara Scott, a state lawmaker, told reporters that Cate Blanchett spoke of the times she shared with Heath Ledger in New York and Los Angeles.
Attendees of the two-hour tribute received a memorial program featuring a photograph of Ledger. At the start of the ceremony, a select group of songs were played, including “These Days” by Australian band Powderfinger; “Wish You Were Here” by Pink Floyd; “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder; “The Times They Are A-Changin’” by Bob Dylan, “Seven Nation Army” by the White Stripes, and a song by The Shins.
Sister Kate Ledger was the first speaker, who addressed the attendants with a montage set to the tune of the Beatles’ “Here Comes The Sun” playing in the background.
The memorial service lasted about 90 minutes. Local media said Heath Ledger's body was then cremated at a private funeral service attended by only about 10 immediate family members.
Other mourners went on to a beachside restaurant for a wake. Kate Ledger and Michelle Williams |
