 Beatles: In outer space
They're one of the worlds best loved; most iconic bands and now they're making waves across of the universe.
A ground station of the US space agency Nasa near Madrid has beamed the Beatles song Across the Universe towards the North Star, Polaris, Spanish media reported on Tuesday.
The Beatles Group will be the first band to have their music played in space, to mark the 40th anniversary of their song Across the Universe. NASA has beamed the Beatles peace anthem across the universe into outer space on the 40th anniversary of the day, the Beatles recorded the song and the 50th anniversary of NASA's founding.
The transmission was aimed at the North Star, Polaris, which is 431 light years away. Former Beatle Paul McCartney congratulated NASA and asked them to pass on his regards to anyone out there.
"Amazing! Well done, NASA!" McCartney said in a message to the space agency. "Send my love to the aliens. All the best, Paul".
Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, characterized the song's transmission as a significant event. "I see that this is the beginning of the new age in which we will communicate with billions of planets across the universe" she said.
"I've been a Beatles fan for 45 years – as long as the Deep Space Network has been around," said Dr. Barry Geldzahler, the network's program executive at NASA Headquarters, Washington. "What a joy, especially considering that 'Across the Universe' is my personal favorite Beatles song".
In another news former Beatles guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who introduced the West to transcendental meditation, died Tuesday at his home in the Dutch town of Vlodrop, a spokesman said. He was thought to be 91 years old.
"He died peacefully at about 7 p.m.," said Bob Roth, a spokesman for the Transcendental Meditation movement that the Maharishi founded. He said his death appeared to be due to "natural causes, his age". |
