Denzel Washington: America's favourite movie star
Denzel Washington has topped the list of America's favourite movie stars for the second consecutive year in a new survey.
The Academy-award winner was also the first choice of Democrats questioned in the annual Harris Poll, while Tom Hanks, the Republicans' favorite actor, captured the number two spot for the second consecutive year. He is currently in theaters playing a hawkish Democrat in "Charlie Wilson's War."
The American Gangster star beat Tom Hanks to the number one spot in the annual Harris Poll, and Johnny Depp jumped up four positions from last year's(2007) survey to steal the number three position.
These are the results of a nationwide Harris Poll of 1,114 U.S. adults surveyed online by Harris Interactive between 4 and 12 December, 2007. For men, Denzel Washington is their favorite while women cite Tom Hanks as their favorite. Age also has some differences. For the two younger generations, Echo Boomers (those aged 18-30) and Generation X (those aged 31-42), Johnny Depp emerges as the favorite. Baby Boomers (those aged 43-61) say Denzel Washington is their favorite movie star.
"I think what we're seeing here, is basically their types of movies," Regina Corso, director of the Harris Poll, said in a telephone interview. Corso added that that a lot of Washington's movies are racially-charged and most African-Americans are Democrats.
Denzel Washington is also the favorite for Matures (those aged 62 and older), but he ties with Tom Hanks in this oldest generation. Republicans, Democrats and Independents not only support different political candidates, they also have different favorite movie stars. For Republicans, Tom Hanks is the favorite, while for Democrats it is Denzel Washington. Independents say Johnny Depp is their favorite. The top 10 is as follows:
1. Denzel Washington 2. Tom Hanks 3. Johnny Depp 4. Julia Roberts 5. Will Smith 6. John Wayne 7. Matt Damon 7. Sean Connery 9. Sandra Bullock 10.Bruce Willis.
