Hollywood stars react to overturning of Calif. gay marriage ban

Dozens of stars took to their Twitter accounts to share the news and celebrate the court's decision, following the overturning of Proposition 8, California's same-sex marriage ban.

Ricky Martin, who announced he was gay in March, Tweeted on Wednesday, "YEAHHHHH!!!!! #PROP8UNCONSTITUTIONAL MOVING FORWARD!!!!!!!!".

Martin tweeted following the announcement that Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker ruled that Proposition 8 violated civil rights.

Ellen DeGeneres wrote on her Twitter account, "This just in: Equality won!".

"Prop 8 was struck down! This news is amazing!!!! Its about time! Congrats to everyone!," reality star Kim Kardashian told her Twitter followers.

Singer Adam Lambert celebrated the court's decision, Tweeting, "We're gonna throw glitter on this barn tonight!!!"

Lance Bass, who is currently out of the country, Tweeted from abroad, writing, "Congrats on the overturning of Prop 8!!!!"

Kristin Chenoweth Tweeted, "Prop 8 overturned in California! Praise God!"

"So You Think You Can Dance" judge/choreographer Adam Shankman wrote, "And justice is served. We are equal once more. God bless the letter of the law."

Sandra Bernhard called for even more equality, Tweeting, "if we can't have the same tax breaks, insurance coverage etc, then we are not paying for your wars, get it together right now."

Journalist Lisa Ling Tweeted, "Happy for my gay friends today. Love reigns."

Before the ruling was handed down, earlier on Wednesday, Access Hollywood caught up with Emmy nominee Jane Lynch at the unveiling of her wax statue at Madame Tussauds in Hollywood, where she sounded off about the controversial proposition.

"I hope that it's positive, and if it gets to the Supreme Court, I hope that turns out to be positive too," Jane told Access.

"It's a wave you can't stop. It's going to happen and people have to just come along."

Kathy Griffin released a statement to Access on the ruling, saying, "I am, of course, thrilled and heartened by Judge Walker's ruling... As we all know, the anti-gay movement is certain to appeal this landmark case to the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in San Francisco and, ultimately, to the United States Supreme Court in Washington.

So, while today's decision is a key victory in the fight for marriage equality, we still have a long way to go before my mother Maggie can break out her box of wine in celebration. I urge my friends and fans to stay strong, be vocal and take strength in the knowledge that we will be on the right side of history."

A host of other stars including Alyssa Milano, Lo Bosworth, Shanna Moakler, Kimberley Locke, Jason Mraz, Nia Vardalos, Perez Hilton and Lisa Bloom reTweeted links to news about Wednesday's ruling.

California voters banned gay marriage by passing Prop. 8, in November 2008, five months after the California State Supreme Court had legalized it.

According to the Associated Press, the ruling in today's landmark case will likely be appealed, and could eventually end up going to the U.S. Supreme Court.
