'Hope for Haiti Now': Charity album debuts at No. 1
Benefit album named 'The Hope for Haiti Now' debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard albums chart, with 171,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
The information system noted that sales for the album, compiled by MTV Networks from performances at Friday's telethon, were particularly impressive since it was available barely two days — between late Friday and Sunday, when the weekly tracking ends.
Album 'Hope for Haiti Now' features 20 performances, including by Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen and Madonna.
More than $66 million has been raised from the telethon, which more than 80 million people watched, according to AP.
"Tik Tok" singer Ke$ha's Animal debuted at No. 2 with 152,000 albums sold. Vampire Weekend's Contra came in at No. 3 and Spoon's Transference at No. 4. 2010 Grammy Nominees compilation album bowed at No. 5.
