Madonna: Goes to Malawi to launch girls school
Pop Queen Madonna arrived in Malawi on Sunday to visit the girls school she is building in the African country.
The 51 year old Madonna reportedly arrived on Ethiopian Airlines, accompanied by her four children - two of whom, Mercy, 3, and David, 4, were adopted from Malawi in 2008.
According to a report, Madonna will take part in a groundbreaking ceremony for the school on Monday afternoon.
Madonna's charity, Raising Malawi, aims to provide food, education, accommodation and medical support to orphans in the country.
Madonna will also meet with President Bingu wa Mutharika and visit some of the orphanages that her Raising Malawi charity supports.
Madonna has been involved with Malawi for several years. She has wrote and produced a documentary, "I Am Because We Are". The documentary has been made on the millions of orphans in the African country of Malawi who have lost parents and siblings to HIV and AIDS, many of whom live on the streets. Nathan Rissman has directed the film.
Malawi, a nation of 13 million, is one of the poorest countries in the world.
The school she is building will be named "Raising Malawi Academy for Girls". It is on the outskirts of the country's capital, Lilongwe and is similar to the one built by talk show host Oprah Winfrey in South Africa.
