U.S. formally asks Switzerland to extradite Polanski
Swiss authorities said that the United States has formally asked Switzerland to extradite Oscar-winning film director Roman Polanski for having sex in 1977 with a 13 year old girl.
Polanski has been wanted in the US since he fled the country after pleading guilty to having unlawful sex with a minor. He recently lost an appeal to be released on bail from a Swiss jail.
The Swiss Justice Ministry said that the U.S. Embassy in Bern submitted the formal extradition request to the Federal Office of Justice on Thursday and it has been forwarded to Zurich authorities for an extradition hearing.
On Friday, the Justice Ministry said in a statement that Polanski may appeal the decision if it approves the request.
The 76 year old Polanski, who holds dual French and Polish citizenship, was arrested on September 26 when he arrived in Zurich to collect a lifetime achievement prize at a film festival.
