'Where the Wild Things Are' tops US box office
Two new films have debuted at the top of the US box office this weekend.
Warner Bros.'s "Where the Wild Things Are" opened as the top film in U.S. and Canadian theaters this weekend.
"Where the Wild Things Are", the adaptation of Maurice Sendak's classic storybook by the director Spike Jonze, earned $32.5 million in its first weekend, beating Jamie Foxx thriller "Law Abiding Citizen" into a second place debut.
"Law Abiding Citizen", distributed by Overture Films, earned $21.3 million to claim second place. The film stars Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler and tells the story of a man who takes revenge on his family’s killers, as well as the criminal justice system.
Ghost flick "Paranormal Activity" took third place with $20.2 million.
"Couples Retreat", which was on top last week, slipped to number four with $17.9 million over the weekend.
Sony Corp.'s horror movie, "The Stepfather", debuted in fifth place with sales of $12.3 million. The movie tells the story of a teenager who returns home from military school to discover his soon-to-be stepfather has a dangerous, violent past.
