T.I.: Wins BET awards from prison
American Grammy Award-winning rapper T.I., who is currently serving behind the bars, has won two trophies on Saturday night at the BET Hip-Hop Awards ceremony.
T.I., who is imprisoned in an Arkansas penitentiary on a federal weapons conviction, won best album of the year for "Paper Trail" and won best collaboration for "Live Your Life" with singer Rihanna. The rapper's fiancee Tameka "Tiny" Cottle accepted the awards on his behalf at the ceremony in Atlanta and read a letter by the rapper, who began serving one year and one day in prison on May 26, 2009.
"Although I'm not there with you all, I'm there in spirit", Cottle read from the letter written by T.I. "My road to redemption is almost over ..... Thanks for the support".
Other award winners include Jay-Z as "MVP of the Year", Drake as "Rookie of the Year" and a posthumous award to DJ AM for "DJ of the Year". Ice Cube received the "I Am Hip-Hop" icon award.
While collecting the award, Ice Cube said, "When you get recognized by your peers for a life of work, you got to be humbled".
DJ AM, who died of an accidental drug overdose in August, won the award for "DJ of the Year".
2009 BET Hip-Hop Awards will be televised on October 27.
