Madonna and Janet Jackson pay tribute to King of Pop
MTV Video Music Awards was held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Sunday, September 13, 2009.
Janet Jackson and Madonna paid tribute to the late Michael Jackson at the Video Music Awards.
Janet Jackson kicked off the 2009 Video Music Awards with a tribute to her brother, Michael. Before Janet took the stage, Madonna emerged on the darkened stage wearing a black zippered jacket and skirt.
Madonna said about Michael Jackson drawing comparisons between their difficult childhoods. She said, "When Michael Jackson was 6 he became a superstar and was perhaps the world's most beloved child. When I was 6 my mother died. I never had a mother, but he never had a childhood".
The Queen of Pop continued, "There is no question that Michael Jackson was one of the greatest talents the world has ever known. His music had an extra layer of inexplicable magic that didn't just make you want to dance but actually made you believe that you could fly, dare to dream, be anything that you wanted to be. Because that is what heroes do. And Michael Jackson was a hero".
At last she said, "Yes, Michael Jackson was a human being, but dammit, he was a king. Long live the king".
After Madonna concluded her tribute, Janet Jackson, wearing a tight black and white outfit, took the stage and recreated the dance moves from her only video made with her brother, "Scream," as a vast screen behind her played the original.
