The family members will escort his coffin on Thursday in a entourage to his home city of Boston. The body of the iconic Democratic U.S. Senator was to lie in state at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library ahead of a Catholic funeral mass on Saturday during which Obama was scheduled to deliver a eulogy.
Kennedy, who was a United States Senator from Massachusetts and a member of the Democratic Party, served 47 years in the Senate. He died on August 25 after a long battle with brain cancer.
For more than 60 years there has been a Kennedy at the forefront of the Democratic party. His death ended his family's long dominance of the party.
