Beyonce and Lady Gaga lead nominations for MTV music awards

MTV announced the nominees for its 2009 Video Music Awards on Tuesday. Pop stars Beyonce Knowles and Lady Gaga each earned nine nominations.

Britney Spears, who won video of the year last year for "Piece of Me", continued her comeback trail with seven nominations.

Kanye West and Eminem earned four nominations each.

They all will compete for the honor of video of the year; Beyonce with "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)", Lady Gaga with "Poker Face", Britney Spears with "Womanizer", Kanye West with "Love Lockdown" and  Eminem with "We Made You".

The nominees for best new artist are Lady Gaga, Drake, 3OH!3, Kid Cudi and Asher Roth.

The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards will air Sunday, September 13 at 9:00PM on MTV. Russell Brand will host the show.

On Tuesday MTV released the full list of nominees.
