Daryl Hannah: Arrested in coal mine protest
American film actress and longtime environmental activist Daryl Hannah and a scientist from NASA were arrested along with 30 others on Tuesday during a protest in southern West Virginia.
State Police said that they were charged on Tuesday afternoon after they blocked a road near a Massey Energy Co. subsidiary's coal processing plant.
The 48 year old Daryl Hannah and others were protesting mountaintop removal mining, a process that involves blasting the peaks off the mountains to get at the deposits inside.
They held a rally outside an elementary school that sits about 300 feet away from the plant's coal storage silo. The crowd marched quietly to the plant and attempted to enter the property. They were blocked by several hundred coal miners. Then they sat on the road and were arrested on misdemeanor charges of obstruction and impeding traffic.
A spokesman for the West Virginia State Police said that all, including Hannah, were released later.
Before she was arrested, Hannah said, "It's not necessary. If you do it wisely, there are ways to use renewables. It's realistic for everybody".
