'The Proposal' tops US box office
People accepted the proposal from Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock.
The movie "The Proposal", a romantic comedy, has hit the top of the North American box office on its opening weekend, pushing "The Hangover" out of the top spot.
"The Proposal", a story about a pushy boss forces her young assistant to marry her in order to keep her Visa status in the U.S. and avoid deportation to Canada, took in $34.1 million to open as the weekend's No. 1 movie, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Last week's topper "Hangover" slipped down to second place with 26.9 million dollars in box office.
The Pixar animated feature "Up" dropped down to third place, earning 21.3 million dollars for the weekend.
The weekend's other big release, the prehistoric buddy comedy "Year One", came in fourth place with $20.2 million.
"The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3" dropped down to No. 5 from No. 3, earning $11.3 million.
