'Hangover' hangs on to box office top spot
The Warner Bros. adult comedy "The Hangover" was the top weekend earner at the North American box office.
The low budget "Hangover", which centered around three groomsmen who lose their about-to-be-wed buddy during their drunken misadventures, then must retrace their steps in order to find him, hauled in 33.4 million dollars.
Disney's latest Pixar Animation hit, "Up", came in a close second again with $30.5 million.
"The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3", a remake of the 1974 subway hijacking thriller, debuted at No. 3 with $25 million. The thriller stars Denzel Washington as a dispatcher matching wits against John Travolta as the mastermind of a subway hijacking.
Comedy sequel "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" came in fourth, taking in $9.6 million, while "Land of the Lost" starring comedian Will Ferrell, was fifth with $9.2 million in sales.
"Imagine That", starring Eddie Murphy as the workaholic father of a precocious daughter with a penchant for picking stocks, came at No. 6 earning $5.7 million.
The overall box office was down sharply from the same weekend a year ago. Earlier in the year, box office takings were up 15% overall on 2008. The figure now stands at 11%. It was the third straight weekend that studio receipts declined.
