'Up' tops box office again
Walt Disney Co.’s 3-D feature "Up" maintained box-office altitude for the second straight week despite the debut of two highly anticipated comedies.
According to studio estimates Sunday, the movie "Up", from Disney’s Pixar animation studio, reeled in $44.2 million to remain on top of the box office for the second weekend.
The Warner Bros. bachelor-bash comedy "The Hangover" came in a close second with a $43.3 million debut. The film about a group of men trying to reconstruct what happened at a wild, Las Vegas bachelor party benefited from a good buzz and positive reviews. It also was the first big comedy released after a month dominated by action flicks.
Will Ferrell's action comedy for Universal, "Land of the Lost", starring Will Ferrell, finished a disappointing third at $19.5 million.
While "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" finished fourth with $14.6 million, "Star Trek", a Paramount issue, followed at No. 5 with $8.4 million.
Revenues for most big movies typically dropped 50 percent or more in the second weekend, but the audience for "Up" was down only 35 percent from its opening.
