David Carradine: Found hanged in Bangkok
American actor David Carradine, who is best known for his work in the 1970s television series "Kung Fu" and more recently in the movie "Kill Bill", was found naked and hanging dead from a rope in the closet of his luxury Bangkok hotel room on Thursday.
Lt. Teerapop Luanseng, the officer responsible for investigating the death, said that the 72 year old actor appeared to have hanged himself in a suite at the luxury Swissotel Nai Lert Park Hotel.
The body of the actor has been sent to a hospital for an autopsy. Results are expected on Friday.
Lt. Teerapop Luanseng said that police are suspecting suicide and investigating the case. He also said, "I can confirm that we found his body, naked, hanging in the closet".
Tiffany Smith of Carradine's management firm, Binder & Associates, said, "All we can say is, we know David would never have committed suicide. We're just waiting for them to finish the investigation and find out what really happened. His family is in shock. They have the same belief we have. There was no way David did this to himself".
Carradine was in Bangkok to shoot his latest movie, "Stretch", but the film crew were aware of his absence when they went to dine out at a restaurant on June 3.
David Carradine appeared in more than 100 feature films with such directors as Scorsese, Ingmar Bergman and Hal Ashby. One of his early film roles was as folk singer Woody Guthrie in Ashby's 1976 biopic, "Bound for Glory". He was nominated four times for a Golden Globe Award.
Condolences came pouring in from friends and family :
Academy Award winning American film director Martin Scorsese said, "I was deeply saddened by the news of David Carradine's passing. We met when we made 'Boxcar Bertha' together, almost 40 years ago. I have very fond memories of our time together on that picture and on 'Mean Streets,' where he agreed to do a brief cameo. David was a great collaborator, a uniquely talented actor, and a wonderful spirit. He loved movies, acting in movies, making movies, and he was always extremely generous".
Actor Michael Madsen said, "David was one of the first actors I ever worked with when I started my career and the closest person to a brother that I ever had in my life. It is shocking to me that he is no longer with us. I had been thinking about calling him for the last several days and advise anybody who has been thinking about reaching out to a loved one to do so. I have so many great memories of David that I wouldn't even know where to begin. He has a very special place in my heart".
American actress Martha Plimpton said, "My uncle David was a brilliantly talented, fiercely intelligent and generous man. He was the nexus of our family in so many ways, and drew us together over the years and kept us connected. I adored him as a child, and as an adult I admired and respected him. We will all miss him terribly, and are so grateful for everyone's condolences".
Actor Rainn Wilson said, "R.I.P. David Carradine. You were a true hero to so many of us children of the 70s. We'll miss you, Kwai Chang Caine".
