Paul Verhoeven: To direct thriller "Surrogate"
BAFTA Award-nominated Dutch film director Paul Verhoeven is coming back to America to develop and direct "The Surrogate", a thriller for 20th Century Fox.
Based on the 2004 novel by Kathryn Mackel, the story of "The Surrogate" follows a couple desperate to have a child who discover that the surrogate they've hired to carry their baby is insane.
The original draft is written by Roderick Taylor and Bruce Taylor.
Verhoeven has made movies in both the Netherlands and the United States. He is best known for directing the American feature films RoboCop (1987), Total Recall (1990), Basic Instinct (1992) and Starship Troopers (1997).
In 1973, Paul Verhoeven's "Turkish Delight" received the award for Best Dutch Film of the Century at the Netherlands Film Festival.
After establishing himself as a dirctor in the Netherlands and on the international art-house circuit, Verhoeven became one of Hollywood's most desired directors in the 1990s with such movies as "Total Recall" and "Basic Instinct".
Paul Verhoeven's most recent directing project was 2006's "Black Book".
