Bill Clinton: To be UN envoy to Haiti
The former US president Bill Clinton will be appointed as the new U.N. special envoy for Haiti, his spokesman said on Monday.
An official announcement is expected from U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon on Tuesday.
The official said that this is a new post specially created for Mr. Clinton, who has been trying to focus world attention on the Caribbean island, which was devastated by hurricanes last year and is the poorest country in the western hemisphere.
According to a report published by the The Miami Herald, Mr. Clinton said that he would be honoured to accept the position.
Bill Clinton would work to rebuild Haiti after last year's tropical storms which claimed the lives of nearly 800 people and caused more or less $1bn in damage.
The former US president has helped to raise funds for Haiti recently.
In March, Mr. Clinton visited Haiti along with Ban Ki-moon and urged the international community to continue to aid the impoverished Caribbean country.
In April, he also attended a donors conference in Washington where participants agreed to donate $324 million to help Haiti rebuild.
Officials said that the State Department is aware of the appointment but could not immediately say if its lawyers have signed off on it.
But U.N. officials did not comment on the announcement.
