'Star Trek' hits top spot at US box office
The new "Star Trek" movie has proved it's popularity grabbing top position at US box office. It earned $72.5 million in its opening weekend.
The new "Star Trek" movie has easily topped the previous record opening weekend in the 11-movie series, which was $30.7 million for 1996's "Star Trek: First Contact".
Director J.J. Abrams' latest film is intended as a "reboot" of the original 1960s television series, with updated special effects and a story line that explains how the crew of the galaxy-hopping Starship Enterprise, including Captain James T. Kirk and his half-Vulcan first officer, Spock, first met.
Last weekend's top box office entry, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", came in at No. 2 with $27 million.
"Ghosts of Girlfriends Past", came in at No. 3 with $10.45 million.
"Obsessed", whic was in third position last week, came in at No. 4 with $6.6 million and "17 Again" earned $4.4 million to land in fifth place.
Another new comedy movie, "Next Day Air", came in at No. 6 with $4 million.
