Keira Knightley: Anti-domestic violence ad banned from TV
An anti-domestic violence advertisement starring British actress Keira Knightley has been banned from television after being deemed too shocking for audiences. It showed that a woman is beigng physically abused by her boyfriend. The entire ad is about violence against women.
The advertising approval board ruled that the promo, which was made for charity Women’s Aid, was too brutal to be shown. They said that it cannot be aired unless the violent scenes are removed.
While speaking with the Telegraph, Lucy Brown from Women's Aid said that the film was justified because it reflected the real threat of domestic violence in society.
Brown told, "We were very careful to reflect what we had heard from anecdotal evidence. We have put this forward to Clearcast, with statistics from the Home Office, and other material".
Chris Hirst, managing director of Grey London Advertising Agency, who created the advertisement, said, "Part of the campaign is to raise awareness about domestic violence, and spark debate, which the advert has done, even if it doesn't make it on television".
The advetisement continues to be available online. Below is the entire ad. Please be warned because of some scenes of graphic violence.
