Al Franken: Wins the Minnesota Senate race
A three-judge panel of a Minnesota court ruled on Monday that the Democrat Al Franken won election as a US Senator beating Republican incumbent Norm Coleman and said the actor turned politician should be certified as the winner.
However, the contest is not over. Coleman immediately announced that he would appeal the widely anticipated ruling to the Minnesota Supreme Court and possibly to federal courts. His petition could further delay the seating of Minnesota's second senator for weeks.
Al Franken said, "I am honored and humbled by this close victory, and I'm looking forward to getting to work as soon as possible".
The panel ended its work last week after finding Franken had a 312-vote lead. But Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty has said he would not certify a state winner until all legal challenges are exhausted.
Al Franken is an American politician, comedian, writer and liberal political commentator. He first became famous as a writer and a performer for the television show 'Saturday Night Live', then moved into writing several films.
Franken announced his candidacy on February 14, 2007 for the 2008 United States Senate election in Minnesota as a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. Then he engaged himself in a post-election struggle with incumbent Republican Senator Norm Coleman of Minnesota.
Lawyers for Norm Coleman charged that the nearly three million votes cast, absentee ballots were improperly rejected while some other votes were counted twice. They are disappointed by Monday's decision.
