Britney Spears and Ashton Kutcher: In Twitter's Top 10
The sound of Twitter has kept the web alive!
Scores and dozens of celebrities have hopped onto the social networking Web site in the last few months, tweeting 140-character messages ranging from what they're eating to questions for fans. And judging by the hundreds of thousands of people who are following them on the site, their fans are Twittering right back.
Britney Spears and Ashton Kutcher, according to TwitterCounter's top 100 list, are almost as popular as Barack Obama and CNN's Breaking News page.
The celebrities from all walks of life, from basketball star Shaquille O'Neal to former Vice President Al Gore, are among the site's most popular users.
CNN's Breaking News Twitter page, as of Saturday, is Twitter's most-followed feed, with 481,541 followers as of Saturday. U.S. president Barack Obama was close behind with 444,132, while Twitter's own official feed ranked third with 394,940 followers.
Then there are the celebs.
Making her fourth on the list, Britney Spears has 364, 219 followers for her official feed. So far Brit's tweets, authored by the pop star, her management and those that run her Web site have offered Britney's latest happenings and news -- like the fact that Fergie was at the pop star's Friday show.
Ashton Kutcher, the tireless Twitterer, is fifth most popular with 327,009 followers, and usually can be spotted using the site several times a day. He's followed by the New York Times with 312,319 followers and new "Late Night" host Jimmy Fallon - who's made an aggressive online push as he's replaced Conan O'Brien on the show -- with 305,890.
In the eighth place on Jimmy's heels is Al Gore with 302,978 and British comedian and actor Stephen Fry in ninth, with 300, 417 followers. Basketball great Shaquille O'Neal rounds out the list just under the 300,000 mark with 294,559 followers. The 7'1" center takes his Twittering into real life, often offering fellow Twitterers a chance to "tag" him for game tickets or other undisclosed prizes by finding him at tweeted locations.
Other stars who rank highly include cyclist Lance Armstrong, whereas MC Hammer ranked at No. 24.
Kutcher's Twitter pal John Mayer comes in at No. 36, while wife Demi Moore - who goes by the name, "mrskutcher" - comes in at No. 65.
Coming in at No. 68 since posting his first tweets in December, Sean "Diddy" Combs has also got the attention of Twitter users this year.
These rankings may not stay the same for long, though -- Ashton and Brit had better watch out for Jimmy Fallon , who had the biggest daily gain on Saturday, adding 33,401 followers to his sizable count.
