Ron Silver: Dies of cancer
American actor, director, producer and political activist Ron Silver died of cancer on March 15 in New York City. He was 62.
Ron Silver had been fighting esophageal cancer for two years.
Robin Bronk, executive director of the Creative Coalition, said, "Ron Silver died peacefully in his sleep with his family around him this morning".
Emmy-nominated Ron Silver had a long, distinguished career on stage, screen and television. He is best known for his recurring role as a slick strategist for liberal President Jed Bartlet on "The West Wing".
While talking about Silver, Bronk said that Silver was not only a very talented actor, but also a champion of free speech and artists rights.
New York-based Creative Coalition is an art-oriented political group founded in 1989 by Ron Silver, Alec Baldwin, Susan Sarandon and others.
Silver began his career on stage in the 1970s and won Broadway's top honor, a Tony Award, for his work in David Mamet's "Speed the Plow".
Ron Silver, a longtime Democrat, became an outspoken supporter of Republican President George W. Bush after the September 11 attacks.
