Charles Barkley: Freed after three days in jail for DUI
Former NBA star Charles Barkley has been released from jail on Monday after serving a three-day sentence on a drunken-driving conviction.
Charles Barkley reported to the jail on Saturday morning wearing a blue warm-up suit with red stripes. Barkley was not required to wear a jail uniform. He was given a private tent but no other special treatment.
Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Brian Lee said that Barkley left the Tent City jail just before 8 a.m., and avoided a group of reporters by leaving through another door.
Charles Barkley was sentenced to 10 days but seven days were suspended. He spent about 36 hours in jail after getting 12 hours of work release on Sunday and Monday.
Former basketball player pleaded guilty last month to two misdemeanor DUI charges stemming from his Dec. 31 arrest, shortly after leaving a Scottsdale nightclub and failing a field sobriety test. He had a blood-alcohol level of .149 percent, nearly twice the legal limit.
Barkley was ordered to pay $2,000 as fine and to take an alcohol education class. He was also ordered to install an ignition-interlock device on his vehicles.
