Barack Obama: Leads birthday salute to Ted Kennedy
US President Barack Obama led a Kennedy Center crowd in a performance of "Happy Birthday" for veteran Democratic Senator Edward Moore "Ted" Kennedy on Sunday.
The 77 year old Democrat was honored at the Kennedy Center in Washington at an event hosted by comedian Bill Cosby. Actresses Lauren Bacall and Bernadette Peters, singer James Taylor and conductor John Williams performed for the audience.
Ted Kennedy is one of the longest-serving US senators and has been receiving treatment for a malignant brain tumor.
Barack Obama went to the center of the stage and then conducted the performers in the birthday tune. Kennedy stood and delivered a thumbs-up from his balcony, where he was accompanied by first lady Michelle Obama.
Later, the president met Mr. Kennedy in his box.
Ted Kennedy's niece Caroline Kennedy presented her uncle with her family's Profile in Courage Award, paying tribute to his efforts to reform the US health care system.
Mr. Kennedy turned 77 on February 22.
