Former US first lady Barbara Bush was recovering on Thursday in a Texas hospital after undergoing open heart surgery. In fact she was also joking with President George H.W. Bush who was in tears out of emotion and said that she looked "beautiful" after her operation.
Sources have highlighted on the news of Barbara Bush. According to them eighty three year old Mrs. Bush was hospitalized after experiencing shortness of breath last week. Doctors have detected a hardened aortic valve and replaced it in a 2.5-hour procedure on Wednesday.
"She looks well to me, and beautiful." Former president Bush told reporters at a press briefing in Houston's Methodist Hospital that was aired by local media, after his wife regained consciousness and began talking and joking with doctors and her husband.
He further added that the Bushes heard on Thursday from President Barack Obama as well as former presidents namely Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, and the couple's son George W. Bush.
Heart surgeon Gerald Lawrie also added that he expected Bush to "recover fully and soon resume her normal activities." However her husband said that he experienced one of the most traumatic days of his life.
He continued, "It didn't seem routine to me when you go in there and put a pig's valve in your wife,". "When I heard about it I was worried sick."
Aortic valve replacements can be either from man-made materials or biologic tissue. In case of Mrs. Bush, the doctors have taken the decision of replacing her aortic valve with that of a pig.
The aortic valve provides crucial life function, and when left untreated a hardened aortic valve can result in heart failure and death.
The valve opens to allow blood to be pumped from the heart out to the body, and then closes to prevent blood from flowing back into the heart.
Lawrie also did not forget to mention that her surgery was timely since Bush "was right at the beginning of trouble" when they decided to operate.
Mr. Bush added the couple has sent emails to their five children shortly before the surgery, and that Barbara Bush had been "discouraging" their children from visiting her in hospital and also preferred a reunion once she got release from hospital in 6 to 9 days.
Bush, who was first lady from 1989 to 1993, underwent a successful surgery for a perforated ulcer in the month of November at the same Houston hospital. However the doctors added that the two medical issues were not related. |
