Lil Wayne: To face NY gun charges
American rapper Lil wayne, who won Grammy Awards this year, will face criminal gun possession charges at a trial scheduled to begin on April 20.
Lil Wayne, whose real name is Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr., was charged with illegal gun possession in 2007 after a police officer boarded his tour bus because she allegedly smelled marijuana, and discovered the rap star trying to hide a handgun.
Rapper Ja Rule, whose real name is Jeffrey Atkins, was also arrested separately on similar charges following a hip hop concert in New York where both men performed. He pleaded innocent and a trial date has not yet been declared.
Lil Wayne, who remains free on $70,000 bail, appeard at court hearing dressed in a black leather jacket and jeans and waved to fans as he left.
According to Lil Wayne's attorney, Stacey Richmond, New York State Supreme Court Judge Charles Solomon allowed the gun to use as evidence in the case.
A spokeswoman at the Manhattan District Attorney's Office said that if convicted, he might face a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
Lil Wayne's album, "Tha Carter III", was the biggest-selling U.S. release of 2008 and won him best rap albums and three other prizes at the 2009 Grammy Awards.
