David Beckham: Debut could be delayed
David Beckham's sore left ankle might force him to miss the Los Angeles Galaxy-Chelsea exhibition on Saturday night.
Speaking with ESPN announcer Rob Stone at halftime of the MLS All-Star Game in Commerce City, Colo., on Thursday night, David Beckham was adamant about saying how badly he wanted to play against Chelsea, but was careful to point out the importance of his ankle being “right” before he starts his career in Major League Soccer.
"I'm still having a lot of treatment,” he said. “At the moment it doesn't look good that I'm going to play because the swelling is still there. I’m here for five years. I'm not here just obviously for the game on Saturday.”
Later on in the interview, he kept the possibility open by saying, "Maybe I'll play some part toward the end of the game if it's all right, but we'll see.”
David Beckham has been nursing his sore left ankle for several weeks ever since hurting it while with the English National Team on June 6 and again on June 17 in his final appearance for Real Madrid.
Should David Beckham miss the game against Chelsea, he’ll have two opportunities to make his debut appearance for the Galaxy next week when the club faces Pachuca on Tuesday and Chivas on Saturday. Both matches are part of a new competition between MLS teams and top sides from Mexico’s top division dubbed as SuperLiga. The two-time MLS Cup champions play FC Dallas in the U.S. Open on July 31 before resuming league play against Toronto FC on August 5.
David Beckham has been in the United States since late last week, and was introduced to the media on Friday. He has yet to be able to fully train with his new club. Accompanied by Galaxy president and GM Alexi Lalas, David Beckham flew into Denver to watch the MLS All-Stars defeat Celtic FC 2-0 before returning back to Los Angeles with teammates Landon Donovan and Cobi Jones after the match. |
