Michael Jackson ordered to pay $256,000
A Los Angeles Superior Court judge ruled today that Michael Jackson had to pay $256,000 in legal fees to a firm that handled some of the side issues during the 2005 child molestation trial. Michael Jackson was ordered to pay the Torrance film of Ayscough & Marar their fee of $216,837, as well as $39,177 in interest on the amount. However, as the judge signed off on the judgment, it came as no surprise to the former King of Pop.
According to Marshall Brubacher, an attorney for Michael Jackson, the singer had agreed in principle to the judge back on June 26. At that time, Brubacher had told the judge that going to trial would be much more costly than the settlement. The Associated Press quoted Brubacher, as he said that "we want to stop the hemorrhaging."
The law firm of Ayscough & Marar sued 48-year-old Michael Jackson after he had failed to pay legal fees to the firm. The law firm had prevented the release of certain information to the public, as well as lawyers in civil cases, during his criminal trial in 2005. The charges against Michael Jackson included several counts of child molestation, though a jury in Santa Barbara County found Michael Jackson not guilty.
When Michael Jackson was facing charges of child molestation in 2005, money was no object to him in terms of fighting off the charge. Michael Jackson hired some of the best lawyers he could, and he managed to beat the charges he faced. However, it turns out that Michael Jackson forgot to pay his legal bill back in 2005. Now, he's been ordered to pay it.
That wasn't the only involvement Michael Jackson had with Ayscough & Marar. The law firm had also helped defend Michael Jackson from a lawsuit that was filed by former business associate Marc Schaffel. Schaffel sued Michael Jackson for $1.4 million, which he claims he was owed, and a jury awarded Schaffel $900,000. However, Michael Jackson countersued Schaffel, and managed to win back $200,000. |
