Tom Cruise: Obtained restraining order against a military veteran
Tom Cruise has obtained restraining order from the court against an Iraq war veteran, after the man brandished a gun near a freeway and tried to hand-deliver a letter to him.
Robert Landheer, the lawyer for the 29 year old former soldier Edward Van Tassel, said taht his client wanted to get the letter in Tom Cruise's hands to enlist him in the cause of helping other veterans.
According to Landheer, the former soldier has gone to Tom Cruise's Beverly Hills mansion on December 3 and then again on last Sunday to deliver the letter.
Santa Barbara Superior Court Judge George Eskin issued a restraining order on Wednesday to prevent the man from approaching Tom Cruise.
Last month, Edward Van Tassel was arrested by the authorities on weapons charges near Santa Barbara, northwest of Los Angeles after they found him standing on a freeway overpass with a gun and a sign in what his attorney described as a protest.
After being arrested, he was sent to a veterans' hospital in Los Angeles, but left the facility when he tried to deliver the letter to Tom Cruise.
Landheer said that Van Tassel is receiving psychiatric treatment at the hospital and he is no longer permitted to leave.
Bert Fields, an attorney for the actor and producer, said that Tom Cruise feels very strongly about veterans of not only the Iraq war, but any veterans of war, and that they should be taken care of. |
