 Jerry Lewis: To receive special Oscar
There is good news for the fans of Jerry Lewis. He is finally getting some respect from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, since its board of governors has given the vote for honoring him with a special Oscar award for his humanitarian work.
Sources have thrown more light on the news of Jerry Lewis. According to them, the creative filmmaker, who did not get Oscar nomination, will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award during the 81st Annual Academy Awards ceremony on 22nd February.
"Jerry is a legendary comedian who has not only brought laughter to millions around the world but has also helped thousands upon thousands by raising funds and awareness for those suffering from muscular dystrophy," added Sid Ganis, the Academy president.
Eighty two-year-old Jerry Lewis made his screen debut with nightclub-act partner Dean Martin in "My Friend Irma," that was released in 1949. After that he began making local and national televised appeals on behalf of the newly founded Muscular Dystrophy Assn. in the beginning of 1950s. He became the national chairman of the organization during 1952. It was he who has spearheaded the annual Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon, which has raised over 2 billion dollars since the year1966.
Jerry Lewis starred alongside Martin in sixteen films before establishing a solo career as a screen performer, director and producer. Special mentioning may be made of the films namely "The Bellboy," "The Nutty Professor," "The Disorderly Orderly" and Martin Scorsese's "The King of Comedy."
In the year 1971 a series of lectures on filmmaking that Jerry Lewis has delivered as an adjunct professor at USC was published as "The Total Film-Maker". |
