Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
"Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" set a new trend for a Wednesday debut at the box office, as the fifth adventure for the teen wizard in Warner Bros. Studios' hugely successful franchise gouged up an estimated $44.8 million in ticket receipts. Box-office reviews said the figure includes roughly $12 million in midnight screenings from early Wednesday morning. This film's debut in 4,181 theaters beat the previous Wednesday opening record set by "Spider-Man 2," which made $40.4 million in 2004. "In terms of box office, the law of diminishing returns does not apply to `Harry Potter.' It seems to be getting better with age," said Paul Dergarabedian, Media By Numbers president, who noted that the July 21 publication of the seventh and final "Harry Potter" novel likely helped drive interest in the latest film. "It has the effect of creating even more excitement for both properties," Dergarabedian said. "It's a synergistic match made in heaven to have the book and movie come out within a couple weeks of each other." In the fifth instalment of the school of sorcery series which opens in cinemas today, Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) is getting older. In line with Harry's increasing inner convulsion, storm clouds are gathering overhead, and the wizard community is in disorder as rumor is spreading about whether the Dark Lord Voldemort has really returned. Even Harry's return to the non- muggle world is not a happy one. Despite saving his awful cousin, Dudley Dursley, and himself from the soul- sucking Dementors, he is on the brink of being expelled from his beloved Hogwarts. While Harry has been spending a execrable school holiday at the Dursleys', his best friends, Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson), have been impounded at the hidden HQ of the Order of the Phoenix – a secret society of witches that believes Voldemort is again at large. At the centre of the secret order is Harry's beloved, newfound godfather, Sirius Black (Gary Oldman), but Harry has little time with Sirius before it's time for school to begin again. The cast includes Emma Watson and Rupert Grint as Harry's closest school mates, with Ralph Fiennes, Michael Gambon, Maggie Smith, Gary Oldman, Helena Bonham Carter, Emma Thompson and Imelda Staunton. |
