American country music artist Taylor Swift won country song of the year, and American country singer-songwriter and musician Hank Williams Jr. was honored as a music icon during the 56th Annual BMI Country Awards.
The 56th Annual BMI Country Awards took place on Tuesday night at BMI's Music Row offices in Nashville.
American country music songwriter Casey Beathard earned his second BMI Country Songwriter of the Year award. He first received the honor in 2004.
According to BMI, the 18 year old Taylor Swift co-wrote "Teardrops On My Guitar" and recorded the song, which was iTunes' no. 1 country song in 2007 as it achieved RIAA Digital Platinum certification in early 2008.
Taylor Swift said, "I love writing with other people, but it’s nice to do it on my own when I can. I’m happy that some of my biggest hits have been solo writes".
The show was hosted by BMI President & CEO Del Bryant and Vice President of Writer/Publisher Relations in Nashville, Jody Williams.
