 Miriam Makeba: Passes away after concert
Miriam Makeba, the famous singer from South Africa, who is highly acclaimed for her melodious voice and also for her efforts to fight against apartheid for last 3 decades in exile, has breathed her last after performing at a concert in Italy. She was seventy six years old.
More news on Miriam Makeba has been inferred from quite a number of sources. Known as "Mama Africa" and the "Empress of African Song," Miriam became the first black South African musician who has achieved gain international fame and was renowned during 1950s for her far-reaching vocals. South Africa’s white minority rulers also loathed her.
Former South African President and anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela has paid tribute to the singer, thereby naming her "South Africa's first lady of song”. He also did not forget to mention that her music actually inspired hope.
"Despite her tremendous sacrifice and the pain she felt to leave behind her beloved family and her country when she went into exile, she continued to make us proud as she used her worldwide fame to focus attention on the abomination of apartheid," added Mandela in a letter that was released by his foundation.
He continued, "It was fitting that her last moments were spent on a stage, enriching the hearts and lives of others -- and again in support of a good cause."
Last Sunday Miriam Makeba fell ill after a concert that was organized to fight against organized crime in the southern Italian town of Baia Verde. Her publicist put forth this bit of information. She died after being rushed to a clinic in Castel Volturno town.
"It was from a heart attack, but she had not been well for some time." The publicist Mark Lechat has commented this to the reporters of a popular news agency of United States. He also said the singer was suffering from arthritis.
