Kelis: Freed from all charges of 2007 incident
Kelis, the R & B songbird became free and clear after three days of court proceedings in Miami.
A judge on Thursday, dismissed all charges against Kelis stemming from a 2007 incident in which she was accused of disrupting a police operation by rushing toward officers and screaming racial profanities.
Her husband Nas was present in court with her when the verdict was handed down.
The 29 year old Kelis was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest without violence. Circuit Judge Antonio Arzola stopped the case from going forward.
Kelis' attorney, Ira Loewy said that the singer will file a civil suit against the Miami Beach Police Department, alleging her civil rights were violated by her unlawful arrest.
Loewy said, "We'll draft a civil rights complaint and hopefully get this filed within the next few weeks or couple of months. She was detained illegally, and her rights under the Fourth and First Amendment were violated. She was slandered by the police press releases that came out. It was totally given out to attack her reputation and was totally false".
There was no immediate comment from prosecutors or the police.
Kelis is famous for her 2003 album, "Tasty", and its chart-topping single, "Milkshake". |
