Rafael Nadal: Wins olympic gold in men's singles
After winning French Open and Wimbledon titles, Rafael Nadal of Spain won once again an Olympic tennis gold in men's singles. He beat Chilean Fernando Gonzalez by 6-3, 7-6 and 6-3.
The gold medal is Spain's first in the Olympic tennis events. Rafael Nadal was already assured of taking over the No. 1 ranking tomorrow for the first time in his career, ending Roger Federer’s reign after four-and-a-half years.
Rafael Nadal was simply red hot in the first set but got lucky in the second when Gonzalez, who stood toe-to-toe with the 22-year-old tyro, fluffed an easy backhand volley on set point. The ruthless Nadal needed no second invitation and moved in for the kill as Gonzalez began to buckle.
Nadal has won 38 of his last 39 matches, including victories over Federer in the finals of the French Open and Wimbledon.
After winning the game, Rafael Nadal said, "I just want to enjoy this moment because I'm having an unbelievable year. It's more than my best dreams so I want to enjoy the moment. I know how difficult it is to win these things. Winning here for me is unbelievable". |
