Mary-Kate Olsen: Seeks immunity in Ledger's death investigation
Federal investigators will question Mary-Kate Olsen, the twin sister of Ashley Olsen, about how Heath Ledger got two powerful painkillers that caused his death. The mystery surrounding the death of Australian actor continues with the reports that the American actress Olsen has refused to talk to police about the overdose unless she is given immunity from prosecution.
Mary-Kate Olsen’s lawyer Michael C Miller has twice refused requests from the Drug Enforcement Administration to speak to the actress, claiming his client had nothing to do with the drugs.
In a statement, Miller said on Monday, "We have provided the government with relevant information including facts in the chronology of events surrounding Mr. Ledger's death and the fact that Ms. Olsen does not know the source of the drugs Mr. Ledger consumed".
The official confirmed a report that Mary-Kate Olsen wants a promise of immunity from prosecution before speaking to the DEA officials. Olsen was a close friend of Ledger's, and was the first person called by a masseuse who found the "Dark Knight" actor's lifeless body in his Manhattan apartment.
The officials said that the authorities have obtained a subpoena that could force Mary-Kate Olsen to appear before a grand jury if negotiations with her lawyer fails. The also said that other potential witnesses all have answered questions voluntarily including doctors, Ledger's ex-girlfriend Michelle Williams and anyone who was in his apartment around the time of his death.
DEA investigators suspect the painkillers oxycodone and hydrocodone found in Ledger's system were obtained with phony prescriptions or other illegal means, the official said. Oxycodone is sold as OxyContin; and hydrocodone as Vicodin.
The other drugs, including anti anxiety medication and sleeping pills, were prescribed legally by doctors in California and Texas.
The DEA's New York office refused to comment anything on the stalemate with Mary-Kate Olsen, which was first reported on Monday by the New York Post.
The police said that after discovering Ledger's body on Jan. 22, the masseuse spent nine minutes making three calls to Mary-Kate Olsen before dialing 911 for help, then called the actress a fourth time after paramedics arrived. The police also said that at some point during the flurry of frantic calls, Olsen, who was in California, summoned her personal security guards to the apartment to help.
It is not known how long Mary-Kate Olsen knew Ledger, but after the Australian actor’s death she said, "Heath was a friend. His death is a tragic loss". |
