 Ashanti: Appointed as tourism ambassador
R&B singer and Long Island native Ashanti became new tourism ambassador.
Ashanti, whose birth name is Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas was introduced on Tuesday at a news conference as one of nine ambassadors who will promote tourism in Nassau County on Long Island.
Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi went to Manhattan on a tourist raid, picking up 16 visitors to the Big Apple and giving them an all-expense-paid tour of Nassau. He introduced the visitors at a news conference at Top of the Rock in Rockefeller Center, where he also presented nine ambassadors.
The most popular name among the ambassadors was Ashanti, the well-known singer, on whom the county executive placed over her white dress an orange blazer with a Nassau County tourism patch.
Ashanti sang at Suozzi's two mayoral inaugurals in her native Glen Cove. The singer said, "It was amazing to be asked, and I wanted to give something back to the community".
Ashanti recently released her fourth studio album, "The Declaration".
Suozzi said. “Nassau County has always been known as a great place to live. Now, we’re showing people that we’re also a great place to visit".
The tourism campaign pitches Nassau as "The Island Next Door" and is targeted at visitors to the city. |
