Omar Sharif: Refuses to pay $445,000
Egyptian actor Omar Sharif has refused to pay $455,000 ‘civil judgement’ that was made against him that has stemmed from a scuffle with a Beverly Hills valet. The news has been inferred from a newspaper of United States.
While briefing the reporters of a popular newspaper, one of the lawyers of Omar Sharif commented that that his client has no intention of paying the settlement since he believed he was "being shaken down" on the basis of his celebrity.
"His position is that the judgement is never going to be collected." This has been quoted by Omar’s lawyer Martin Singer.
Seventy six year old Omar Sharif pleaded no contest to misdemeanor battery and was sentenced to probation for 2 years in the criminal case that has stemmed from his skirmish with Juan Ochoa Anderson. The incident has occurred outside a steakhouse in the year 2005.
Singer said "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Doctor Zhivago" star Sharif had been willing to pay "thousands" to Anderson in compensation. However he broke off the negotiations when he got convinced that the valet wanted a settlement based on the actor's fame and not on ground of actual injuries.
As a result, Sharif stopped defending himself against the civil suit of Anderson and did not attend the trial, which resulted in a default judgement that has included costs of $445,000.
According to the newspaper report, Anderson will struggle hard to collect any of the judgementby saying that Sharif has no assets in the United States and thus the judgement will not prevent him from traveling to the country.
So the only remedy available for Anderson is to sue Sharif in Egypt, which would likely to be costly and time-consuming. |
