George Clooney: Calls for unity among actors' unions
George Clooney offered some proposals to two actors' unions to get together instead of quarreling.
Clooney adopted a neutral stance in the dispute between SAG and AFTRA.
George Clooney said that it is the time for the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) to build a united front in making crucial contracts with major studios.
George Clooney said in a statement, "Rather than pitting artist against artist, maybe we could find a way to get what both unions are looking for".
Both SAG and AFTRA are looking for new deals with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) to replace the existing contracts which will expire on June 30.
The two acting unions, who previously negotiated contracts jointly, have split earlier this year.
Tom Hanks, Alec Baldwin and others have joined hundreds of actors, who are signing an online petition urging actors to sign the AFTRA pact.
Meanwhile, Jack Nicholson, Viggo Mortensen and Holly Hunter have endorsed a SAG ad calling for AFTRA to return to the negotiating table to get a better deal.
George Clooney called the fight harmful. He warned that pitting artist against artist would be a fatal strategy for both actors unions.
George Clooney said, "Because the one thing you can be sure of is that stories about Jack Nicholson vs. Tom Hanks only strengthens the negotiating power of the AMPTP".
The actors dispute has echoed the 14-week Hollywood screenwriters strike, which plunged the US entertainment industry into crisis and cost billions of dollars in losses.
SAG deputy executive director Pamm Fair called George Clooney's stand is valuable input. |
