Oprah Winfrey regains top spot in celebrity rankings
Media queen Oprah Winfrey reclaimed her throne atop Forbes magazine's annual magazine listing of the world's most powerful celebrities, replacing her couch-hopping buddy Tom Cruise.
Canadian chanteuse Celine Dion is the lone Canadian on the list -- not including actor Sandra Oh, who made the list as part of the Grey's Anatomy cast at No. 12. Ms. Dion ranked 20th with total earnings of US$45-million in 2006. It's the sixth year that the Quebec-born singer has made the list. Her highest ranking was in 1999 when she hit the top 10 for the first and only time at No. 9.
Oprah Winfrey returned to the top by raking in a staggering US$260-million from her media empire that includes a production company, a talk show and magazine. This is the second year that Oprah Winfrey has been ranked first, last reaching the top spot in 2005. She has been in the top 10 for nine consecutive years.
The Forbes celebrity ranking gives the most weight to a celebrity's earnings over the past 12 months, but also factors in "popularity metrics" such as Internet presence, press clippings, magazine cover stories and mentions on television and radio.
Tiger Woods was in second place, having made more than US$100-million on and off the golf course through his prize money earnings and myriad endorsement contracts. The grand sum represents more than any other athlete in history.
Tom Cruise, meanwhile, fell to 8th, after he parted ways with Paramount Pictures last summer and saw his earnings drop to US$31-million from US$67-million. Mr. Cruise, who also topped the list in 2001, is now joined by Ms. Winfrey as the only two celebrities to top the list more than once.
Despite Mr. Cruise's fall, it was a strong year for Hollywood with several actors increasing their position on the ranking. Brad Pitt, finally broke into the top 10, at No. 5, after appearing on the list six out of the past nine years and Johnny Depp hit No. 6 on the strength of his US$92-million pay cheque last year.
Britney Spears, who topped the list in 2002, is nowhere to be found this year. Neither is Jennifer Lopez, No. 59 in 2006, Bruce Springsteen No. 11 in 2006 and the cast of the Sopranos, the television series that ended last Sunday.
