Kanye West: Sued by late jazz man's daughter
Rapper Kanye West along with Method Man, Redman,, Common and also their record companies have been sued on Thursday by late U.S. jazz musician Joe Farrell's daughter. She has accused them of using her father's music without legal approval.
Kathleen Firrantello has filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in New York, claiming that they have used samples of Farrell's 1974 composition 'Upon This Rock' in three different songs. These are Kanye West's 'Gone', Common's 'Chi-City' and Method Man and Redman's 'Run 4 Cover'.
The labels are also named in the lawsuit, which include "Island Def Jam Music Group" and its label 'Roc-A-Fella Records', "Universal Music Group" and its labels 'Interscope Records', 'Geffen Records' and 'A&M Records' and its parent company "Vivendi".
None of the record companies or representatives for the Kanye West or other rappers have made comment on the matter.
According to the lawsuit, Firrantello seeks punitive damages of at least $1 million and asks that no further copies of the songs should be made, sold or performed. |
