Queen Elizabeth II has made a "significant" personal donation to the relief efforts at Myanmar. On Tuesday the news has been confirmed by the Buckingham Palace. Queen Elizabeth II has contributed at the time when the first British relief flight started its journey for the cyclone-ravaged country.
However the exact amount of money that has been donated by Queen Elizabeth II was not revealed. It is only reported that perhaps the contribution has gone to Britain's Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC). DEC is an ‘umbrella body’ of the charitable agencies.
Information about the news about the donation of Queen Elizabeth II too can be collected by the media from other sources as well. The spokesperson of Buckingham Palace too has thrown some light in this matter. "The queen has made a significant personal donation to the Burma appeal," adds the source.
The first British aid flight left for Dubai on Monday carrying enough relief material for nearly forty three thousand families who were affected by the cyclone at Myanmar. Following a refueling stop-over, it is scheduled to arrive on Wednesday. Five more British aid flights are expected to leave for the country sometime later in this week.
Regarding this, the Department for International Development of Britain said that at least 10 times the aid flow has been allowed to filter into Myanmar by its ruling military junta. It is essential along with the international expertise that is very much needed for its distribution.
The DFID team in Myanmar's main city Yangon has been coordinating with other non-governmental organizations. They have done it in order to make assessment of their capacity to take over DFID-procured boats. The department has added this bit of information
According to the source, DFID has been working with the World Food Program to plug the gap in suitable lifting equipment for getting flights unloaded quickly at Yangon airport.
Apart from personal contribution of Queen Elizabeth II, Britain has made 5 million pounds (10 million dollars, 6.3 million euros) that was available for helping the relief effort.
