Time proves to be really tough for Uma Thurman. Very recently she has responded to the French cosmetics giant Lancome's lawsuit against her. There has been a dispute regarding the contract over the use of Uma’s name and face in an advertising campaign.
The sources have revealed more information regarding Uma Thurman’s news. In the lawsuit the "Kill Bill" star has clarified that ‘Lancome Parfums et Beaute & Cie’ rightly has boosted its worldwide sales. In this way they have enhanced its "prestige, stature and bargaining power" by helping the retailers and other concerned people to use her name and likeness in advertising and promotions even after the expiry of her contract with them.
The suit demands 15 million dollars as damages.
In self defense Lancome also have come forth with their comments on Wednesday. In order to shield itself from any kind of legal hassles they have said that the thirty eight year old Uma Thurman has threatened litigation against it. The company also asked a state judge to rule against her claim that her name and face were used on Canadian billboards and also in other Asian Web sites even after the period of contract.
Uma Thurman's lawyer, Bertram Fields, has described the state lawsuit of Lancome as “a pre-emptive blow."
The dispute between Uma Thurman and the company has stemmed up regarding a two-year contract. It was being signed by both the parties on April 2000, with an option of extending the agreement for another two years.
According to the contract, Uma Thurman has to pay 5.8 million dollars for the first two years and also 3.1 million dollars for each additional year, if the company exercised its option.
Lancome also brought forth their counterattack. They have claimed that the as per the contract the company was hardly responsible if any other third parties used Uma’s name and face after the lapse of the agreement.
Lancome's lawyer namely Peter D. Raymond has commented that the lawsuit of the company would take priority in court because it was first filed.
"They involve the same set of facts and issues, so you don't need both of them," added the lawyer.
The lawsuit kept Uma Thurman busy through out the week in Manhattan courts.
Apart from Uma Thurman there are other celebrities who too have endorsed products for Lancome. They are actresses namely Isabella Rossellini, Juliette Binoche, Mena Suvari and Drew Barrymore. Model Carol Alt too has endorsed Lancome’s products.
