The singer Emilio Navaira might face charges of drunken driving. He was traveling on a tour bus to north along west 610 Loop near the Southwest Freeway when it crashed into a set of freeway barrels. It happened early in the morning on March 23, 2008 in Bellaire.
According to a police report Emilio Navaira was seriously injured and several others were hurt.
As per another report, Harris County Assistant District Attorney Eric Kugler felt this case warranted a DWI (driving while intoxicated) charge but also felt the injuries were sufficient to support the charge of intoxication assault.
After a Houston show, Emilio Navaira was driving his band's bus.
In the original police report, the 45 year old Navaira was drunk at the time of the crash. The report said a blood test indicated his blood-alcohol level was 0.19. The legal limit in Texas is 0.08.
Initially, the doctors said that Emilio Navaira might not survive the crash, but after surgery to relieve pressure on his brain and repair a lung injury, they upgraded his condition to fair. They sent him from Memorial Hermann hospital to a nearby rehabilitation institute on April 18.
Emilio Navaira won a 2003 Grammy Award for his album "Acuerdate".
