Tom Cruise: Gets good reviews for appearing at Winfrey's show
PR experts gave good reviews about Tom Cruise’s appearance on the Oprah Whitney’s show. Unlike this Hollywood hunk’s couch-jumping appearance on the show telecasted almost three years ago, this time, Tom Cruise was sober, thoughtful and defended his personal beliefs without being pompous. It was a long one hour interview and it came on air on Friday.
Quite a number of public relations experts admitted that Tom Cruise’s approach on the show of Oprah Whitney was a smart one.
Howard Bragman, the founder of a famous Los Angeles PR firm remarked “I think Tom learned his lesson. The lesson was that sometimes your personal beliefs can get in the way of the projects." "And you don't want people to be turned off to you so that they're turned off to your projects."
More news about Tom Cruise’s episode on the show has been gathered. Oprah Winfrey interviewed forty five year old Tom Cruise and the interview was taped at his Telluride, Colo., home. Another show, allocated as a celebration of the actor’s twenty five year old career in movies, was recorded before an audience at Winfrey's Chicago studio. It is being aired on Monday.
All these interviews of Tom Cruise seem to be part of an effort to remove the bad patch and involve people to talk about his career once again, instead of his personal life.
When asked whether he believes that he comes under attack unnecessarily due of his belief in the Church of Scientology, Tom Cruise answered quite intelligently. He said that he has understood the interest in "a minority religion."
He further added that “when I'm dealing with my humanitarian issues, I'll talk about my humanitarian issues, and when I'm promoting a film, I'm just going to promote the film. And that's just the way it's going to be."
Hollywood media expert Michael Levine said that Tom Cruise would "do well to cool the Scientology stuff. That's grown very wearisome for a lot of Americans. ... There's certainly no problem with him stating his religious choice is different from the majority, but when he gets aggressive and starts pushing it, there is some blowback."
According to Levin, Tom Cruise's handling of the Winfrey interview was a good step, However it is just a part of a process during which Tom Cruise will have to avoid doing things that would enable the media to write negatively about him.
"When you're in a hole, quit digging," adds Levin.
The source says that Tom Cruise is in talks to star in a fourth "Mission: Impossible" film, which would represent a reunion between the actor and Viacom Chairman Sumner Redstone. In fact he has severed a fourteen year relationship with Tom Cruise and his producing partner, Paula Wagner, in the month of August 2006
Cruise's last movie, "Lions for Lambs," was the first release from MGM's United Artists banner since Cruise and Wagner took it over in late 2006. Also starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep, it was box-office dud. But it too has met the same fate of most movies concerning the Middle East and the war on terror in current years.
His next starring role is as a World War II German officer in "Valkyrie." Although it is scheduled to be released on Oct. 3 it got postponed till President's Day weekend starting Feb. 13, 2009.
But first, Cruise is gathering great buzz for a cameo in the upcoming Ben Stiller comedy "Tropic Thunder," as a mostly bald, fat studio chief.
Comedy might be a good avenue for Tom Cruise to explore, Levine said. "Nothing mitigates tension like humor," he said.
Winfrey and a subdued, jeans-wearing Cruise conducted the interview on an overstuffed couch in the living room. Tom Cruise commented that his couch-jumping was an authentic way of expressing his feelings for Katie Holmes.
In the current show, Holmes, Cruise’s present wife, welcomed Winfrey to the couple's home at the top of the show. She then left Cruise to conduct a tour, which included a peek at daughter Suri's playrooms, the home's kitchen, Cruise's collection of bound film scripts, and stunning views of snow-topped mountains.
Almost after a month after appearing o the show, Tom Cruise put forth his criticism criticized against Brooke Shields for taking anti-depression drugs after her child birth. He also rebuked Lauer for suggesting that psychiatric treatment might help some patients.
Tom Cruise regretted his views "came out wrong." "I personally don't (believe in antidepressants). ... But I think that people have the, it's their decision. When you look at something, it's an individual's right to make a decision on what they're going to do with their life," adds Cruise.
Regarding Scientology, he said when he declines to answer questions on the topic, he is being alleged for being escapist. When he does answer questions, he is called preacher.
Much of the rest of the interview centres on Tom Cruise who goes on talking about several rumors and news reports.
As per Tom Cruise’s saying, Nicole Kidman, his former wife, still has a relationship with the two children that they had adopted during their marriage and stressed that both of them share custody of the kids. He also said he loves Holmes' family and refer than as ‘amazing people’.
When asked about critics who have developed the belief that his marriage to Holmes is a public relations stunt, Tom Cruise chuckled “That's laughable to me. I don't know what to say."
Winfrey asked about a book that she said "implied" Suri was not Cruise's child.
"I've had a lot of books written about me. When someone compares your daughter to Rosemary's baby — it's one thing to come after me. Say stuff about me," he said. "But when it comes to my family, my children, that's when I went, `This is off the chart.'"
Public relations executive David Brokaw said Tom Cruise's approach on Winfrey's show "might be a bit boring" but was a triumphant PR move.
He said it is hard to overestimate what a huge star like Tom Cruise has gone with entire personal life became a staple for media gossips. Not only that his toddler daughter Suri also has become a favorite for media.
Still, the best step Cruise could take next would be to do what he originally became famous i.e making great films. This has been added by Brokaw. Laughingly he said
"If he makes a great movie that we all feel compelled to go to, then it just makes us more interested in what Suri is going to be doing when she's 4". |
