Sherman Hemsley: 'The Jeffersons' actor passes away aged 74
Actor Sherman Hemsley, best known as George Jefferson from 'The Jeffersons', has died at the age of 74.
It appears Hemsley died from natural causes. He passed away at his home in El Paso, Texas, TMZ reports.
Hemsley, originally, became famous for his appearances on All in the Family as George Jefferson, the role that would eventually make him famous.
Such was the popularity of George and Louise 'Weezy' Jefferson that they were spun-off into their own sitcom, The Jeffersons, which ran for 11 seasons between 1975 and 1985, becoming in the process the longest-running sitcom with a predominantly black cast in American history.
Later, Hemsley featured in the NBC sitcom Amen, and regularly made on-screen appearances with his Jeffersons co-star Isabel Sanford until her death in 2009.
The veteran star was also a professional singer, and released the single 'Ain't That A Kick In The Head' in 1989.
