Madonna: To be co-highlighted with Jackson's "Thriller" at Tribeca Film Fest
Jane Rosenthal, co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival, said on Wednesday at the opening press conference, "Great films energize our lives." We couldn't agree more, so for the next 11 days we'll play tour guide, steering you toward all the festival's highs (and, since not all movies are masterpieces, away from the occasional lows). Today offers the perfect opportunity to acclimate, with a sampling of some of the festival's strong suits. Since Tribeca is a celeb-spotter's dream, we should probably start with Madonna's labor of love, "I Am Because We Are." You're likely to see her if you can snare a seat (see below for advice on sold-out screenings). But the subject matter is even more compelling than the star, who wrote and produced this urgent documentary about orphans in Malawi, where her adopted son was born.
Tribeca, like any good festival, boasts indies ready to generate some buzz. Today's hot property is "Elite Squad," an ultraviolent police thriller that was a smash in its native Brazil. And we'll line up for "Somers Town," a British coming-of-age comedy from Shane Meadows, whose "This Is England" was a favorite here last year.
At the Tribeca Film Festival, while many festival films will feature a post-show Q&A, a ticket for tonight's screening includes an in-depth discussion between Morris and "Jarhead" author Tony Swofford. Several Tribeca entries are already set for arthouse releases - and Errol Morris' Abu Ghraib documentary, "Standard Operating Procedure", actually opens tomorrow. So this is your last chance at a sneak peek - and it comes with an intriguing bonus.
If you don't really feel like spending your time inside a stuffy theater, you can head to the World Financial Center, the site of the Tribeca Drive-In. Tonight's free family event celebrates the 25th anniversary of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" with a showing of the epic music video and the "Making of 'Thriller'" doc. You'll also find face painting, a dance party and an MJ look-alike contest. So yes, now's the time to bust out that wicked moonwalk you perfected back in 1984. |
